Locusts
Locusts are large grasshoppers. Swarming species gather in huge numbers, move from field to field and strip the vegetation in their path.
Why you don’t want these neighbours
- CropsThey eat grain, melon and vegetable crops.
- PasturesLivestock is left without forage.
- Move onFrom neighbouring land onto your fields.
- New hotspotsEgg pods in the soil mean trouble next year.
Signs of a problem
The earlier the treatment, the easier the result.
What to know about the pest
These traits decide which control method will work.
- 3 speciesof locusts are the most dangerous: the Italian locust, Moroccan locust and migratory locust.
- egg pods— locust eggs overwinter in them, in the soil of fallow land and pastures.
- hoppers— the most vulnerable stage: they can’t fly and stay in bands, so treatment targets them.
- own weightin food per day can be eaten by an adult locust.
How to deal with it
Professional treatment plus prevention keeps results longer.
